This class is for youngsters ranging in age from 6 months to 10 months of age. The class covers all of the basic obedience trainings such as heeling, sit, down, stay and come but the expectations for the adolescents is a bit more relaxed than what is expected from the adult dogs. We will also take the time to discuss problems you may be experiencing at home with your energetic youngster. Discussions will include canine behaviorisms that will help you understand how dogs view the world and what you need to do as an owner to help your canine companion better fit into your family. If you have taken our Puppy Kindergarten class within the last 6 months, you may deduct $5.00 from the class price as a thank you for your continued effort in making your dog the best that he/she can be. Beginners Obedience for Adults: This class is designed for dogs 11 months and older. The items covered in Beginners Obedience for Adults require some focus and discipline from both you and your dog. Classes are open to all purebred and mixed-breed dogs. There must be a minimum of 5 dogs registered to hold a class. We do not train your dog in our classes. We teach you how to train your dog. Our instructors are all volunteers with many years of experience training their own dogs. Our classes are based on the reward method, where you reward your dog when he/she successfully completes something you have asked him/her to do. Once your dog understands that good things come from you when they are listening, you will be amazed at just how smart your dog can be! Our clubhouse is located on the WH Lyons Fairgrounds in the 'Old MacDonald's Farm' building. The building is in the middle of the fairgrounds on the West edge. (Construction may alter available routes.) There are signs identifying the building. Bring your hungry dog, a leash and a pocket full of treats each night to class. A hungry dog works better. Please choose a treat that your dog truly loves. The treat should be something that can be cut or broken in to very small tidbits. It can be either a store bought treat or people food, such as small pieces of chicken, liver, beef hot dogs or cheese. Whatever you choose, be sure it can be carried easily in your pocket. We ask that while you are in training for the 6 weeks of class, that you only give this treat to your dog while you are in class or when you are practicing at home. If you give this same treat to your dog for just any old thing, your dog will lose interest in the treat and it will no longer be ‘special’. For the first several weeks of class, your dog may be very stressed and may display some signs of aggression or fear. Rest assured that this is not uncommon and it will pass as the weeks go on. Please keep your leash short and keep your eye on your dog at all times. DO NOT allow your dog to greet and touch noses with any of the other dogs in class. The unusual situation of being in a strange place with strange people and strange dogs can make dogs react in negative ways. If you know your dog has aggressive tendencies, you are making a wise choice by bringing your dog to obedience classes. The class will help you gain control of your dog and will help to socialize your dog, however we ask that you bring your dog muzzled to protect the people and other dogs in the building. You can purchase a muzzle at the pet supply stores here in Sioux Falls. You will need to supply a copy of your dogs vaccination records with your registration. Vaccination records must be current and complete and must include the bordatella (kennel cough). Some vets do not give the bordatella unless the owner requests it, so check with your vet to see if your dog has received the vaccination. If he/she has not, you should get your dog vaccinated a minimum of two days prior to the start of class. For a complete description of the required vaccinations go to the class policies page. |
