The Sioux Empire Kennel Club is an All Breed Kennel Club
founded in 1961 in Sioux Falls, SD by a group of local dog
enthusiasts. After permission was granted by the American
Kennel Club, the local group held its first AKC licensed all
breed conformation show September 15, 1962. The SEKC
then became a member club of the American Kennel Club in
September of 1968 in the Sioux Falls Arena.
Upon leaving the Arena, the SEKC joined with the kennel club
from Sioux City IA and briefly with the kennel club from
Worthington Mn for a combined show to be held in
Vermillion, SD. After a few years, the clubs split and the
SEKC returned to Sioux Falls where they hold their show in
the Expo Building on the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds, where it is
currently held the last weekend in October.
The first AKC Sanctioned obedience match was held on June
16, 1963 with the first licensed obedience trial being in 1965;
unfortunately the exact date is no longer known. An
obedience trial is held annually in conjunction with the fall
show, which since 2005 has also included rally obedience.
On September 25, 1998 the club held its first AKC licensed
agility trial outdoors at the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds. In 2008
the trial was moved to its current home also the Expo
Building still on the W. H. Lyons Fairgrounds the first
weekend in April.
Today the club of about 75 dog enthusiasts has its
clubhouse on the W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds where its general
membership meeting is held the second Tuesday of every
month. Many members claim champions in several fields of
competition including conformation, agility, obedience, and
field trials.
The SEKC has as a first priority the responsible breeding of
purebred dogs. However, membership is not limited to those
with “show” dogs: all dogs and their owners are welcome.
The club currently offers quarterly obedience, conformation,
and agility classes for puppies and adult dogs.
Educational programs are offered as well as conformation
and obedience matches for exhibitors to hone their skills,
sometimes with a fee to cover expenses. The Canine Courier,
the official newsletter of the SEKC, is published monthly.
Guests are always welcome at meetings. Anyone who would
like to help at one of our events should just contact the club.
